How to Obtain Post Office Travel Money and Understanding Rates

There are 5 ways you can buy foreign currency from Post Office branches:

 

  1. In store at any branch with a Bureau de Change
  2. Click and collect same day for USD and Euro from all branches, if placed before 2pm
  3. For all other currencies, click and collect next working day from your local Post Office branch
  4. Order online and get delivered to your home 
  5. Purchase a Prepaid Travel Money Card for use abroad.

Post Office Travel Money Cards

Post Office offers a pre-paid Mastercard for up to 22 currencies.

Exchange rates on the Travel Money Card are lower than pre-ordering cash. 

Once on the card, the balance cannot be refunded unless your trip has been cancelled.

It is advised to always ensure you select to pay with local currency when using the card.

Fees:

  • £2 a month inactive card fee (after 12 months)
  • 1.5% Reload fee (min £3, max £50)
  • ATM cash withdrawal fee (based on country).

How do Post Office exchange rates compare to other providers?

When ordering online, the more you buy, the better the rate. This does mean for smaller transactions, between £400 and £1,000, the rates are not as competitive as other high street options.

There are 57 at the time of writing including some hard to find currencies, but please check in advance for up to date information. Click and Collect order online need to be between £400 and £2,500 equivalent. Please note that destination countries will have limits to how much cash you can bring in.

Cancelling the order incur a £20 fee.

 To collect currency ordered online, you need to bring:

• A valid UK photographic driving licence, passport or EU national identity card

• The card you used to place your order – both ID and payment card must have the same name

While it is not stated as a requirement, it’s worth ensuring you have the order number from the confirmation email.
