Who is Sainsbury's?

J Sainsbury plc is currently the second largest supermarket chain in the UK.

Sainsbury’s was established in 1869, by John James Sainsbury as a retailer of fresh foods in a shop on Drury Lane in Covent Garden, London.

Packaged groceries were introduced in 1903, and  every shop offered home delivery. It offered centrally located shops and a trading philosophy of “Quality perfect, prices lower”.

Inspired by a visit to the US, Alan Sainsbury was convinced that the future for supermarkets lay with self-service and the availability of car parking.

The first self-service branch opened in Croydon in 1950.
